Matheson Hammock Park, a designated Miami-Dade County Heritage Park, is an approximately 462-acre county park that is owned and managed by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. It is the known as the county’s first park and was opened in 1930.The land was gifted to the county by American industrialist William John Matheson. The park was designed by renowned landscape architect William Lyman Phillips. It is now a popular park forSouth Miami and Coral Gables residents with recreational opportunities like birdwatching, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, bicycling, and picnicking.West Matheson Hammock is comprised of approximately 109 acres and consists of environmentally sensitive hardwood hammock, open spaces, and the Historic Nursery Complex(West Matheson Greenhouse) which includes a Royal Palm Promenade. Miami Dade CountyPark, Recreation, and Open Spaces department received a Small Matching Grant from the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Historical Resources to complete a Historic StructureReport for the West Matheson Greenhouse, historically known as the Dade County Nursery.R.J. Heisen bottle Architects was retained to complete the report and to document the existing conditions of the Nursery’s HeadHouse and Slat Shed and provide recommendations for the restoration of the Head House and reconstruction of the Slat Shed structure, and adaptive re-use alternatives for both. The goal is to restore these important historical structures so that they can be appreciated and enjoyed by the Miami Dade community for years to come.
