Deering Estate Stone House

Built for American businessman Charles Deering, the three-story Stone House was designed by architect Phineas Paistin 1922. Due to trepidation of fire after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 the house was constructed as fire-resistant as possible at that time. It is constructed of 18 inch poured concrete walls, Florida oolitic limestone, coffered ceilings and copper clad and brass doors. The house was built to house Mr. Deering’s tapestries, paintings, books and antique furnishings he had spent decades collecting.R.J. Heisenbottle Architects (RJHA) was awarded the project by Miami Dade County Parks andRecreation Department to restore the historic Stone House. The following is a general description of the project scope of work for architectural and engineering services for the proposed repairs and restoration of the historical Stone House at the Charles Deering Estate: Reroofing, reconstruction of the rooftop observation deck, repairs or replacement of observed deteriorated existing wood members, restoration of all windows and doors, replacement of hurricane screens, cleaning of all exterior wall surfaces, cleaning of all interior stone, repair of cast stone cornices, patch and repair of oolitic limestone, patch and repair of cast stone, patch and repair of stucco, repair cracks on the window sills, columns, arches and porch flooring, plaster repair and painting, replacement of sump pump and emergency generator, removal of AHU cabinet in Great Hall, and miscellaneous structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection repairs/replacement.
